Privacy policy
What stays on your device, what we store, and who else sees your data. Contact us if you have any questions.
What stays on your device
The editor itself is genuinely local. The following never reaches our servers:
- Your projects and the timeline document - names, edits, and settings, stored in your browser
- Media you import, and the media library that holds it
- Project thumbnails, which are rendered and stored locally
- Videos you export - the file is produced in your browser and saved straight to your computer
- Automatic captions and transcription, which run on your device
- Background removal and smart clips, which also run on your device
If you never use an AI generation or stock media feature, your footage does not leave your machine.
What is sent to other services
Some features cannot run on your device, and they work by sending data to a third party. Here is exactly what goes where:
- AI image and video generation - Tencent Cloud (VOD AIGC): your text prompt, and any reference image or image you ask us to edit, are sent to Tencent to produce the result. The generated file is returned to you and is also stored temporarily by Tencent.
- AI music generation - musicapi.ai: when this feature is enabled, your description of the music is sent to musicapi.ai. No media from your project is sent.
- Stock media - Pixabay, Freesound and Jamendo: your search terms are sent to whichever library you are searching, and downloading a clip requests it from that library. Nothing from your project is sent.
- Telegram: if you link the Lucy bot, the messages and photos you send it pass through Telegram and reach our server, so we can generate what you asked for.
- Email - Resend: your email address is sent to Resend so it can deliver verification and account emails.
- Payments - Stripe: if paid plans are enabled, your payment details go directly to Stripe. We never see or store card numbers.
- Hosting and infrastructure - Railway, Upstash: our application and database run on Railway. Upstash provides rate limiting and session storage.
- Analytics - Databuddy: anonymised visitor counts. We do not track how you use the editor, and no video content is involved.
Looking ahead: we are building features that process media on a server rather than in your browser - for example restyling a clip with AI. Where a feature works that way, the media you choose to use with it will be uploaded for processing. We will always make it clear at the point of use, and features that do not need to upload anything will continue not to.
Accounts and what we store
Lucy requires an account to use AI features. If you create one, we store on our own server:
- Your name and email address, and a securely hashed password
- Sign-in sessions and email verification records
- Your token balance and a ledger of how tokens were spent
- A record of each AI generation: the prompt text you wrote, the kind of generation, its status, and a link to the result
- Your Telegram link, if you connect the bot
- Subscription status, if paid plans are enabled
- Any feedback you choose to send us
We keep generation records so your token balance is auditable and so you can find earlier results. We do not use your prompts or generated content to train models.
Your projects and media are not part of this. They stay in your browser.
Local storage and cookies
We use browser local storage, IndexedDB and OPFS to:
- Save your projects and imported media on your device
- Remember your editor preferences, settings and language
- Store app state the editor needs between sessions
We also set a cookie to keep you signed in. You can clear local data through your browser settings at any time - but see the note below about what that removes.
Your rights
- You can use the editor without an account; an account is only needed for AI features
- Clearing your browser data removes your locally stored projects and media - permanently, because we do not hold a copy
- You can ask us to delete your account and the data associated with it
- Contact us with any privacy question or request
